How Nursing Translates into Project Management

I recently made the jump from bedside nursing to MBA to a health tech company. Somewhere along the way, I discovered project management, and was immediately fascinated with this highly organized, highly systematic process. I didn’t know it, but I had been managing projects for years as a nurse and in previous roles without the tools or knowledge to make me successful. Through class and studying, I learned that project management isn’t so different from nursing.

Project Management is built on the understanding that complex projects require one person to lead them, and that there are specific projects that a project manager would be assigned to manage. The project manager’s key activities include creating a plan (Project management plan), schedule, the project scope, identifying key stakeholders, and identifying and mitigating risks.

A bedside nurse is assigned to a patient (or patients) for just one day. First thing in the morning, they develop an understanding of their patients, they create a plan for the day…
